One Watch, Many Personalities. A Closer Look at Watch Straps
Share
A good watch should be ready for different situations. But the right strap can change not only how comfortable it feels on your wrist, but also its entire character. From classic elegance to outdoor functionality.
At Nadir, our philosophy has always been to create tool watches - durable, legible and reliable companions for everyday life and travel. But that doesn't mean giving up on traditional watchmaking, classic materials or timeless style.
Quite the opposite. We believe a good mechanical watch should bring these two worlds together.

That's why our collection includes both traditional leather straps and modern FKM rubber alternatives. Each material has its strengths, limitations and ideal uses.
And, of course, the possibilities don't end there.
Leather - A Tribute to Traditional Watchmaking
There's something special about pairing a steel mechanical watch with natural leather.
Perhaps it's the tradition. For decades, leather straps have been an essential part of watchmaking. Or perhaps it's the material itself, which develops character over time, gradually changing its appearance and acquiring a unique patina.
At Nadir, we appreciate traditional leather straps for exactly these qualities.
Our straps are handcrafted in Poland using Italian Pueblo leather from the Badalassi Carlo tannery. This vegetable-tanned leather has a distinctive matte texture that gradually develops a character of its own.
It's a natural material that complements a mechanical timepiece beautifully, giving it a more classic, sometimes even elegant appearance, without taking away its tool-watch DNA.
A leather strap works particularly well for everyday wear, meetings or travelling when you want your watch to look equally appropriate with a shirt or a simple T-shirt.
But leather has its limitations.
It doesn't appreciate prolonged exposure to water, heavy perspiration or repeated cycles of soaking and drying. Even the finest natural leather isn't the ideal choice for swimming, long summer adventures or activities where your watch regularly gets wet.
We don't pretend otherwise.
And that's exactly why we also offer an alternative.
FKM Rubber - When Function Comes First
If leather represents tradition, FKM represents a modern approach to functionality.
Fluoroelastomer, commonly known as FKM, is a material used in applications where resistance to demanding conditions matters. In watchmaking, it's valued for its flexibility, durability and excellent resistance to water, sweat and many environmental factors.
For us, it's first and foremost a practical choice.
The FKM straps offered by Nadir feature a ventilated design that helps reduce moisture buildup beneath the strap and improves comfort in warm weather.
Their flexibility allows the strap to adapt comfortably to the wrist while helping absorb minor vibrations and movement. Something motorcycle riders and outdoor enthusiasts can particularly appreciate.
Unlike leather, FKM doesn't absorb water. After swimming, a workout or a long day in dusty and sweaty conditions, it can simply be washed and dried.
Why do we like FKM?
- Water resistance - rain, swimming and perspiration are no problem.
- Flexibility - comfortable on the wrist, with some ability to absorb minor vibrations.
- Ventilation - our strap design improves comfort, especially during summer.
- Easy maintenance - water and mild soap are usually all you need.
- Durability - a material well suited to regular use in demanding conditions.

FKM is our preferred choice for summer, motorcycle trips and outdoor activities.
At the same time, a well-matched rubber strap can give a watch a modern, sporty appearance. This works particularly well with the contrasting colour accents of the Vespera GMT collection.
Nylon, NATO, Zulu and Sailcloth - More Ways to Wear Your Watch
Although we primarily focus on leather and FKM, the possibilities for personalising a Nadir watch go much further.

We've seen Vespera and Vespera GMT owners experimenting with nylon, NATO, Zulu and sailcloth straps. And it's easy to understand why.
Nylon straps, including NATO and Zulu styles, have strong roots in military and utilitarian watch design. They're lightweight, durable and available in a huge variety of colours and patterns.
The traditional NATO construction, with material passing beneath the watch case, offers additional security if one spring bar fails. However, there's a trade-off - the extra layer of fabric adds thickness beneath the case.
Two-piece nylon straps offer an interesting alternative. They retain the same practical, utilitarian character without adding extra height underneath the watch. This can be particularly important when wearing a watch beneath a motorcycle jacket cuff.
Sailcloth is another interesting option. Inspired by the texture of traditional sail fabrics, these straps complement sports and dive watches particularly well.
Depending on their construction, they can offer good moisture resistance, durability and a more refined appearance than a traditional NATO strap.
It's worth remembering, however, that the term sailcloth covers different materials and constructions. Not every sailcloth strap is completely waterproof.
What About Stainless Steel Bracelets?

There's one obvious option we haven't mentioned yet - the stainless steel bracelet.
We know that for many watch enthusiasts, a bracelet is not just an alternative but their preferred choice. And we understand why. It's durable, versatile, resistant to water and often gives a watch a more substantial feel on the wrist.
So why have we chosen straps for Nadir watches?
The answer comes down to how and where we use our watches.
Take overlanding, for example. Driving hundreds of kilometres with a watch on a steel bracelet is perfectly comfortable. But once you leave the driver's seat, things can change.
Preparing a campfire, handling recovery gear or wrestling with a winch rope - these are situations where a flexible leather, rubber or nylon strap can be more comfortable and less likely to catch on equipment. A steel bracelet can also pick up scratches and knocks along the way.
And then there's motorcycling.
From our own experience, a steel bracelet is far from ideal on a motorcycle, especially during long rides or off-road adventures. Vibrations, constant wrist movement, riding gloves and tight jacket cuffs can make a rigid metal bracelet noticeably less comfortable than a flexible strap.
Of course, comfort depends on the bracelet's design, fit and the individual rider. Some motorcyclists happily wear steel bracelets for thousands of kilometres.
Ultimately, it's a matter of personal preference.

We don't consider bracelets inferior, nor do we believe there's one perfect solution for everyone.
We simply favour materials that suit the way we travel and use our watches. For Nadir, leather and FKM have been a natural choice from the beginning.
While we also work on a custom made bracelet for the Segla model.
The Strap Monster - One Watch, Many Personalities
Among watch enthusiasts, there's a popular expression: strap monster.
It describes a watch that looks good on almost any strap. One whose character can change dramatically in just a few moments, without replacing the watch itself.
And that's exactly how we see Nadir watches.
The Vespera and Vespera GMT were designed first and foremost as durable, practical tools. But their legible dials, distinctive cases and functional design also make them particularly versatile when it comes to strap combinations.
On Pueblo leather, a Vespera takes on a more traditional character, suitable even for more official occasions (especially Vespera Blue with it's polished bezel and a brown elegant strap).
On FKM rubber, it becomes a sporty companion for summer holidays, motorcycle adventures or an active weekend.
On a nylon NATO, it develops a more rugged, military-inspired look. And on sailcloth, it can strike a balance between sporty functionality and understated style.
You don't necessarily need several watches for different occasions. Sometimes, a few carefully chosen straps are enough.
One Strap Doesn't Have to Do Everything
At Nadir, we often talk about GADA watches - Go Anywhere, Do Anything. Watches designed to accompany their owners wherever the road may lead.
But that doesn't mean every strap needs to perform equally well in every situation.
For a mountain trip involving rain and mud, we'd choose FKM. The same goes for a summer motorcycle adventure, where heat and perspiration can really put a strap's comfort to the test.
For a relaxed weekend, an evening out or everyday use, we're always happy to return to natural leather.
Nylon and sailcloth remain interesting alternatives, particularly for enthusiasts who enjoy experimenting with different styles.
And that's really the point. Strap changes watch's personality.
Our Choice? Leather and FKM
There's a reason we decided to offer both.
We appreciate traditional watchmaking. Mechanical movements, natural materials and the craftsmanship behind a well-made leather strap.
At the same time, we design watches to be genuinely used - on the road, on motorcycles, in the mountains and throughout everyday life.
That's why we see absolutely no contradiction in wearing the same watch on an elegant, handcrafted leather strap one day, and on waterproof FKM the next, somewhere along a gravel road far from home.
Two different approaches to the same timepiece. Both have their place.
